Meet Alexa, an Engineering Management Program (EMP) participant

As a participant in AMETEK’s Engineering Management Program, Alexa has first-hand experience into the technical challenges of AMETEK’s businesses. Here, she talks about the personal and professional challenges she’s experienced on her journey to engineering excellence.

Alexa is currently completing her last rotation of the Engineering Management Program at Reichert Technologies in New York

What attracted you to a career with AMETEK?

I didn’t have a clear idea of what path I wanted to take within engineering, and the Engineering Management Program seemed like a good way to work in different industries and different parts of the United States. AMETEK is also a lot larger than any company I have worked for, so that also drew me to the program.

What has your experience been of the Engineering Management Program so far?

I’ve really enjoyed my experience so far! I have learned so much about products and industries that I hadn’t even heard of before. I have been thrown into highly technical design work and problem-solving tasks, which is honestly the best way to learn. The relocations can be challenging, but when you lean into the challenge, you realize that it is an adventure not many people get the chance to take.

What support have you received from colleagues in your development?

At first, I was a little intimidated to be working with such experts in these niche technologies. But I’ve learned that they are very eager to teach, or at least show you what they are working on. I warned them from the start that I am full of questions, and everyone is willing to answer whatever I ask, no matter how basic a topic it might seem to them.

How is AMETEK helping you reach your career goals?

This program has given me the rare opportunity to rake in an incredible amount of experience in completely different industries to broaden my skillset. I have enough knowledge from my rotations to suggest solutions for my team’s problems that others might have never thought about, purely because I have gotten to work in different industries.

What project has been particularly satisfying for you to work on?

My first large project during my time at Gatan is satisfying to look back on, because I went from fresh college graduate to the lead on a design project in less than a year. At the beginning, I knew nothing about the standard practices that the experts think of as second nature. By the end, I was leading my own design reviews, delegating tasks, testing, and eventually training other employees!

What have you been working on recently?

I have been at Reichert Technologies in New York for about two months for my last rotation. Here, I have been focusing on manufacturing improvements and documentation of procedures. This is the first medical device company I have worked for and the largest volume production facility, so I’m learning more about the FDA submission process and the analysis that goes into making manufacturing more efficient.
