AMETEK supports
FIRST® Robotics

Background

AMETEK colleagues and businesses around the world support FIRST® Robotics clubs by sharing their talent, time, and resources. To promote STEM education, the AMETEK Foundation enhances this engagement by sponsoring the clubs that they champion.

Everyone wins with FIRST® Robotics

Sponsored by the AMETEK Foundation, employee volunteers support FIRST® Robotics by mentoring students, promoting teamwork, building confidence, and developing leadership skills—all while the students design and build fully-functioning robots.

In the fast-paced world of technology and innovation, cultivating the next generation of problem solvers is essential. As a global manufacturer, AMETEK recognizes that the future of our industry depends on young people turning their passions into STEM careers.

To support this endeavor, the AMETEK Foundation proudly supports FIRST® Robotics to amplify our colleagues’ worldwide involvement in the organization.

Sponsored by the AMETEK Foundation and Creaform, Justin, a project engineer for Creaform, mentors a Quebec-based team by enhancing their knowledge in engineering and exposing them to real-world technologies and processes.

Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology, FIRST® is a global robotics community that prepares young people for the future through a suite of inclusive, team-based robotics-building programs. Its emphasis is on personal growth and not solely on technical achievement.

There are a variety of roles to include all students in the program—from design and building, to fundraising and research, to marketing and business development—every student can actively participate and benefit. As students conduct research, fundraise, design, build, and test their robots for competition, they gain invaluable skills and life lessons.

According to inventor and FIRST® founder, Dean Kamen, “It’s not about the robots. We are not using kids to build robots; we are using robots to build kids.”

AMETEK Japan colleagues provide mentorship to students as they get ready to compete, helping them to become stronger leaders in science and technology.
Emily, a mechanical engineer for AMETEK Navitar, mentors a club in Rochester, New York. She empowers the students to use computer-aided design to build custom components on their robot, and she also assists in scouting, which helps students to sharpen their interviewing skills.

Central to the success of FIRST® Robotics are the coaches and mentors who volunteer their time and expertise to guide students throughout the competition season. Their guidance extends beyond technical skills, offering advice on leadership, communication, and career development.

In fact, the FIRST® Robotics journeys of two AMETEK employees have come full circle. After participating as students in their high schools’ programs, they now mentor at their respective high schools in Illinois and New York.

Zach, a mechanical engineer for AMETEK Atlas Material Testing Technology, reflects on his experience: “I know first-hand how much this organization has helped me in my engineering education and in my early engineering career. I choose to volunteer my time every year because I want to help ensure that the current students gain the same valuable experience that I did.”

Zach, a mechanical engineer for Atlas Material Testing, mentors a club in Lake Zurich, Illinois. He enjoys seeing the skillsets of the students advance as they progress from initial training days to successfully building a robot through the course of a school year.

Emily, a mechanical engineer for AMETEK Navitar, echoes this sentiment: “I was a member of the team as a high school student, and being a part of it inspired me to go into the engineering field and continue to expand on the foundational skills I developed within the program. I am happy to pay it forward to an organization that guided me into my career.”

Zach and Emily perfectly illustrate the importance of supporting organizations such as FIRST® Robotics. By empowering today's youth with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to succeed, AMETEK is helping to lay the foundation for a brighter tomorrow.
