Meet Trent, a Financial Management Program (FMP) graduate


Trent, a graduate of Duquesne University, has worked at AMETEK since 2019. He is a graduate of AMETEK’s Financial Management Program (FMP), a three-year rotational experience that gave him exposure and insight into numerous areas of AMETEK.

How did your career begin with AMETEK?

AMETEK was on campus for recruiting events and I ended up speaking to their team. I was interested in the organization’s decentralized structure, how the businesses worked, and how it grew through acquisitions. Next thing I knew, I was accepting the position.

What was your experience of the FMP?

Through AMETEK’s FMP, I learned about various parts of the businesses, like operations, driving results, and helping report those results. Within the finance function, you go beyond just the accounting. I started at Energy and Process Instrumentations. In my second year, I moved to a different area of the organization before concluding as an auditor at the corporate headquarters in Berwyn, Pennsylvania.

We had learning sessions with the corporate leadership team, so I was able to get valuable exposure to senior management. It’s a very worthwhile program, and a fantastic way to jumpstart your career.

Excellent accounting and finance management are critical to a results-driven business such as AMETEK. What’s the team’s approach?

The accounting and finance teams compile the results, analyze data for improvements, and set goals and timelines. During my rotation, I compiled weekly reports on cash generation after speaking to the controllers of each business about key changes. I would then share the reports to senior management.

People always assume the financial side of a business is about the numbers – but what about the people?

The people I worked with were the best part of the program. If I had a question or wanted to work through a problem, everyone was happy to help. The program offers great exposure to all levels of the company. It gives you a chance to meet colleagues who will guide and teach you.

What do you find most compelling about a career with AMETEK?

If you’re willing to move around and have an open mind about your job, there’s endless growth at AMETEK. You move around, get different job titles, and learn to adapt to a different businesses. I was able to immerse myself in the finance team. By the end, I was impacting results as a valuable member of the team.
